After becoming exposed to COVID-19 at work, I rushed to get tested at the first facility I could find with an available appointment. Unfortunately, I forgot to verify if the provider performing the test was covered by my health insurance plan; they were not. As a result I incurred a $6K bill.

Speaking from experience, it can be scary to learn when you have been exposed to COVID-19, but remain calm and perform your due diligence to locate a provider that is within network. In fact, do it now and save at least three (3) potential providers you can call in case you are faced with a similar situation.

That's just ridiculous. They should volunteer the tests or at reduce the cost. We're dealing with enuff craziness already now a 6K Dr bill. Again RIDICULOUS

I thought every one who is positive for covid or is being tested for it will get free healthcare? My fiance got his test for free.

Agreed! I feel like no one is reporting the hidden costs. More alarming, I was instructed to return to get retested even if I tested negative. Glad I avoided that unnecessary bill

Not the case. I thought it was free since the provider never even mentioned anything about price.

Knowledge is Power! The Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security (CARES) Act, enacted on March 27, 2020, expanded protections by requiring private plans to also fully cover out-of-network tests. The CARES Act requires health plans to reimburse out-of-network COVID-19 test claims at up to the cash price that the provider has posted on a public web site. The CARES Act is silent as to the amount private plans should reimburse out-of-network COVID test providers that do not post their cash price online, though the law does require a civil money penalty of up to $300 per day for providers that fail to post prices. The CARES Act also does not prohibit out-of-network providers from billing patients directly for the COVID-19 test. Don't be bullied!
