You will NOT lose public benefits because of the Child Tax Credit

ICYMI (In Case You Missed It)

Stop! Don’t know where to start when it comes to claiming the Child Tax Credit? Take our short quiz to find out.

Contrary to popular belief, the Child Tax Credit will NOT affect:

  • SNAP Benefits
  • Medicaid
  • TANF Cash Assistance
  • SSI or other public benefits

If you don’t have any income, or if your only income is from benefit programs like SSI, SNAP, or WIC, you still qualify for the newly expanded Child Tax Credit!

The Child Tax Credit is not considered taxable income, so it won’t change how much you receive in federal benefits. This includes unemployment insurance, Medicaid, SNAP, SSI, SSDI, TANF, WIC, Section 8, or Public Housing.

Note: The Child Tax Credit (and EITC) will be subject to the asset test one year after you receive the funds.

Even if you don’t have any income from last year…

You are still eligible to claim all of the expanded Child Tax Credit. Here’s a breakdown of the income thresholds:

  • Up to $75,000 for Single or married/filing separately
  • Up to $112,500 for Head of Household
  • Up to $150,000 for Married, filing joining

If you make more than that (up to $400,000) you will receive a smaller tax credit.
