For your insurance bill, i would try to call the billing to be put in a payment plan or ask for reduction in bill.

I'd see if you can do a payment plan. Then, try to make small deposits of what you can afford every month. Or see if they can give you one lump sum.

Years ago I went through a nonprofit consumer credit counselor through the United Way. At that time they offered a program to communicate with each collector and turned all the debts into one monthly payment plan for 2 years. Since they were non-profit, they didn't collect any percentage of money you put into it – it all goes to your debt. I don't know if this is how you would want to go, or if the United Way still has this service but it's an option you can still look into in your area by researching 'nonprofit consumer credit counselors'.

What are some of the best methods when trying to reduce debt?

I know I mentioned credit counseling above as an option but an experience I had recently was a $400 charge from an eye doctor I saw nearly 8 years ago that recently appeared on my Experian credit report. When I checked the two other credit reports it was there too. I challenged it through all three credit reports (because I knew my insurance had paid it long ago and I knew this wasn't recent debt at all) a few weeks later a decision was rendered in my favor and it was deleted in all three reports (they claim it takes up to 30 days to reach a decision). Understand how old the debt is, and if you – or the your insurance company at that time – paid it. Sometimes debt collectors buy debt regardless of how much or how little information there is. Some debt companies will also claim that you did not pay it when you or your insurance did. I'm not saying to avoid the debt, but to understand it and to make sure you are not being taken advantage of by debt collectors with bad practices. Most creditors will try to help you find a way to pay your debt however if you know the debt exists.

If your bill gets sent to a collection agency they usually let you settle for half the price sometimes less.

I did not know that you could reduce your medical debt by requesting it…. thank you all!
