Does anyone have any advice about investing in ETFs?

I've heard they are good for beginners but I don't even know what they are.

One source is Yahoo Finance.

I'm starting to invest in funds that pay a consistent 5% - 7% as their goal. It's more geared for retirees which means there's a bond component a safety net.

But if you want to gamble on upside profits just buy a Dow index fund but I wouldn't aside from a small portion of my investments. Dow is due for a correction.

Exactly what are ETFs?

ETF stands for exchange traded funds. They are like mutual funds in that they are a basket of stocks. Unlike mutual funds, which only get traded at the end of the day, ETFs trade all day long like regular stocks.

So ETFs are like mutual funds but with the added entertainment value of watching them rise and fall, hitting refresh on your computer all day?

Buying index-based ETFs like SPY is a safer choice, unless one is very good in stock picking.
