While I do like saving money, every now and again, I enjoy doing something for myself. In fact, I find it very vital to give myself a day where I enjoy eating something that I love, going to a place that I love going, or something along those lines. For me, my typical outing would consist of going to Taco Bell and ordering off of the dollar menu. There are these things called nacho crunch double stack tacos which are so good. In fact, they are heavier than a typical taco, and cost less. Before heading out, I will pop some popcorn at home to take to my local park. While I’m at the park, I eat my Taco Bell, and I feed the squirrels the popcorn. Sometimes I even bring a friend with me. It might not sound like a lot, but doing this about once a week really allows me to feel like I’ve done something for myself.

There are definitely times when I need a little something different, and I might find it acceptable to spend a little gas money to drive an hour away from my house so that I can shop around at Goodwill or shop sales ads and use my money savings apps to my advantage. I also use Groupon here and there to find fun things to do around town that I can get a discount on. It really boils down to that saying “to each their own.” With all of that being said, what are some ways that you have found to entertain yourself, but not feel guilty about it and still save money at the end of the week?

We took a drive to a bakery about 40 minutes away and combined some small errands along the way…. first time out for more than dr visits or grocery shopping in more than 6 months……

During the pandemic, I've found that I've been able to commit some more time and resources to my whisk(e)y hobby. With the hardship that restaurants have been having, a lot more product seems to end up at the stores.

I bet that was so refreshing. I lost my car several years ago and i didn’t leave unless I had medical transportation to the physician or to the grocery store. I had cabin fever so bad. I live in a very rural area with no public transportation. I used to haggle with the local Enterprise to get a really low rate for a weekend so I could have a nice outing. I have a car now, but I rarely leave due to social anxiety.

Since we can't get out much due to the pandemic, we have been making popcorn with our airpopper ( then topping with butter and/or flavorings like cheese) and then watching a movie on tv or a dvd that we have. It has become a fun activity for my husband and I without having to spend much or go anywhere.

Nice! What all does your whiskey hobby entail?

That's totally my vibe. I have a watchlist on Hulu and Netflix that is pretty full.

It's mostly about tasting whisk(e)y and building knowledge through those experiences. Sharing whisk(e)y with others and comparing notes is a big part of that, but that aspect has unfortunately been limited during the pandemic. There's something about hunting specific bottles and the financial aspect of how much I'm willing to pay for bottles based on availability and quality. I'm currently in an American rye phase, but my phases usually cycle through bourbon and Scotch as well. I currently have 125 bottles of whisk(e)y in my collection, and I've even branched out into rum with 33 bottles. I've also had experiencing aging spirits with oak and blending spirits. I don't do any of this from an investment or speculative standpoint. It's about learning through all the senses.

Very cool! I don't drink but I could get obsessed with displaying it all. Maybe a Mid Century bar setup.

Maybe don't get into collecting and displaying full bottles; the stuff was made to be consumed. But I could see collecting and displaying empty bottles, perhaps with colored water added for effect. I've also seen plenty of crafts that repurpose whisk(e)y bottles.

I made several lamps with my Dad's Beefeater's jugs. Also made terrariums, never-ending supply of those bottles…

I use zero based budgeting. One of the line items is a 'fun fund'. Guilt-free spending :) I say it's a necessary innecessity to treat yourself.

I love an occasional treat now and then but we have definitely cut back on them alot and learned to improvise for now .

Yes, getting out is limited. I'm fortunate that I live close to a bike path and foot hill trails. It helps to take a walk or bike. It's great to see others out enjoying themselves. I'm very happy with my community for observing wearing masks. It makes me feel that they respect others.
