Any ideas to save money on one income for a family of 4 that is already living paycheck to paycheck and would like to stop renting because mortgage payments would be less than rent?

Review your monthly expenses and look for ways to cut down. You might want to downsize on cable/satellite and cell phone services. Open a savings account specifically to save for your down payment and add to it as you cut your expenses. If you get tax refunds, put aside as much of it as you can.

Be sure to do a true comparison when deciding if homeownership is the cheaper option than renting. Owning a home has costs which include the mortgage, utilities, insurance, taxes, and maintenance. While renting is usually the rent payment, utilities, and insurance. Without comparing all the cost you may find your housing costs taking up a larger portion of your budget leaving you with little or no money for other things.

As for saving money you will need to go over your budget and see if there are any areas you can cut costs or spending. Additionally, you may want to automate your savings by having it direct deposited into a separate account or by setting up reoccurring transfers from your primary account.

Also check to see if your area offers grants, down payment assistance, or other rebates to first time homeowners. Many municipalities offer assistance to first time homeowners.
