The rule of thumb is to have an emergency fund with money to cover three to six months of expenses.

Much like retirees who have spent a lifetime saving and aren't able to change gears and spend those savings, in addition to building an emergency fund, it can often help to establish rules on what constitutes an emergency and when the emergency fund can be used to cover expenses.

Start small by saving $1000 and then continue to make goals to save more.

My first savings goal is to keep 6-months living expenses in my savings account. I started with rent. I pre-paid October rent in my rental management’s online portal and had 5 additional month’s rent in my savings account. Since the extra $600 per week unemployment benefit ended in July, I have been unable to replace withdrawals from savings to pay rent. So my 1st savings goal is to get back to 5 months rent in savings with one pre-paid month.
