I save $70/pp and I use Ally bank which gives me .80% interest. This is so much more than my regular credit union savings interest of .050%.

Have a savings account set up so it is not as easy to withdraw your savings.

I began setting money aside for large purchases / expenses and quickly became addicted. Before I knew it, I had 5 figures in my savings accounts.

Tiffany Aliche, The Budgetnista, suggested using an online savings account because the funds are not as easily accessible. Her example was a shirt you like on sale. If the money is in your savings you can decide to just transfer the amount from your savings into checking. But if it is in a virtual savings account, it takes several days for the transferred funds to be available. By then, hopefully, the shirt is no longer on sale, and not an item you want to purchase.

I saved $3 a day from making my coffee rather than buying it out during the week and rewarded myself on the weekends. Just by doing this I saved $60 a month.

That is the best way to save! Let Starbucks keep their coffee and you make your own!

This is a great example of how a small change can reap bigger rewards for saving.

To be a successful saver, I think you need these 2 attributes:

  1. Patience: can choose saving over instant gratification.
  2. Foresight: can anticipate what your future needs might/will be.
