I have 2 written off credit cards and get hounded by debt collectors. If I file for bankruptcy what will this do to my situation?

When you file for bankruptcy, you will need to list the original creditor and any new debt collectors that have purchased the original account to have them wiped out once your bankruptcy has been discharged.

I did debt settlement when I was in my early 20s and it tanked my credit score for the four years it took me to pay it off. It was better than filing for bankruptcy, and I felt more in control and very relieved when I paid it all off. Of course, I didn't learn my lesson the first time around, and here I am in my 40s doing it again. I have about 2 1/2 yrs to go at $885/mo to pay off all my credit card debt. I used my CCs to go on trips and have adventures, not to buy stuff. Was it worth it? Maybe in the short term, but now I'm back to trying to cut it down. I even picked up a second job to try and pay it off sooner. My employer offered credit counseling, and the guy I talked to said debt settlement was the best route, but I really wished I had done something different and they recommended the settlement-debt consolidation or even just holding off until I could pick up the second job probably would have been more beneficial, especially in terms of my credit score. Plus, the amount I'm paying the debt settlement company seems a bit excessive. I think, if I had taken my time and done a bit more research, I would have been able to settle most of my debts myself through my cc companies rather than having to pay a company to do it for me and have to pay all these extra fees. So, in summary, in my opinion, explore ALL your options before deciding on filing for bankruptcy.

Bankruptcy is an option, but you must be sure you won't be needing credit any time for the next few years. Have a plan for re-establishing your credit also.
