Do y’all think now is a good time to invest? If so, what kinds of stocks do you think would be best?

Deleted user

Whether or not now is a good time to invest is going to depend on your personal situation. How is your debt situation? Have you established an emergency fund to cover the unexpected? What are your financial goals? If you need the money in the near future, it probably doesn't make sense to expose that money to risk. Have you researched your investments thoroughly enough to understand the risks? Taking your goals and risk tolerance into consideration should help you decide whether you should invest in individual stocks or something more or less risky.

That's helpful. And if I'm ready for some individual stocks, what recommendations do you have?

Deleted user

First and foremost, if you're set on investing in individual stocks, do your research and understand the risk you're taking in doing so. Determine what it is you're looking for in a company and decide on the financial goals of your investment. Consider entry and exit strategies for the investment. Have a plan in place and execute it.

So when you say you're ready for individual stocks are you already fundamentally or technically analyzing some stocks. Or is it that you have enough money that you've put aside and willing to lose in order tor learn?

Regardless I'm reticent in giving stock suggestions to an open forum that has beginners. As suggestions may go either way in the market and many people here are struggling.

If it comes to suggestions if you are truly ready and have an investment plan there are many sites that can direct you in the right direct. For example…
Going to trade penny stocks - pennystocks.com
Going for dividend stocks - dividend.com

I feel there is a website for any strategy and you can start there for suggestions.

Just remember to do your own research throughly.

We're a long ways from retirement so we are investing. We buy index funds in an IRA. It's the prudent thing to do based on historical stock market behavior but who knows what the results will be. At least we'll know we tried.

I have always wanted to invest in stocks. We now have a little extra money I think I'm going to make a small leap just to try my luck out. Like I'm REALLY wishing I had stock in toilet paper and sanitizer before this last few months hit lol.. anyone who wants to give some suggestion I am open to opinions

To @Amber R: Surely there is some luck in stocks, but if I were to give a comparison in gambling games … it is more like poker than anything else. While there is luck, there is a skill component that will significantly help with gains and prevent losses. So might I suggest you read a couple of books on investing such as those on some of the other threads, create a strategy before you jump in.

A book that helped me get started:
The Motley Fool Investment Guide: Third Edition: How the Fools Beat Wall Street's Wise Men and How You Can Too

For some basic information to get you started, try John Bogle's Little Book of Common Sense Investing.

Anytime is a good time to invest. Look for companies that are promising to add more value than its price, buy and hold. Also study what companies have been stable and continue to show growth.

Whenever you have more than 5 -preferably more than 10- years until you start withdrawing.

IMO in normal times dollar cost averaging (investing a set amount consistently) in funds that track the major indexes proves historically successful. But today the markets may be due for a correction.

So I would put half that intended amount in indexes and leave half in higher interest savings to average in later when the market drops a lot.

I'd also suggest setting aside 10% of your monthly investment goal for one of the cryptocurrency choices. PayPal has a low commission option.

What I would not do in today's market is invest heavily in gold & silver. If you just gotta have a stake in it choose a mining stock that also harvests industrial metals.

And there are also investment funds like Wealthfront ($500 min) that lets you set risk levels or Redwood fund (pay what you want fees via an Aspiration checking account).

Still feel nervous? Try US Savings bonds. Not the best returns today but as solid as the US dollar at least. Just don't plan on cashing them in for years.

That is a great book. If you enjoy it, I would suggest continuing by reading "The Little Book That Still Beats the Market" by Joel Greenblatt and "The Little Book of Value Investing" by Christopher H. Browne.
