I wonder which one is better, a 401k or a Roth IRA..?

Retirement means not having to work to support your self. To do so comfortably takes good planning. To maintain health be sure to also plan on staying active hobbies or volunteering, no vegitating.

A great way to begin investing your money for later in retirement would be starting with safer options like CDs or money markets. Educate yourself and research validated resources for any investment types with higher volatility. The longer your money is invested, the more compound interest you'll accrued. Even if it's just spare change, consistency will pay off exponentially in the end.
I like looking at websites like this one, The Penny Hoarder, and Nerd Wallet. The best and worst thing about the internet is that anyone can post anything, so keep an eye out for that free education, but also utilize discernment as you navigate through the sites.
Best of luck!

My spouse doesn't plan to ever retire. But I am saving for it knowing there's no guarantee our health will hold out and that our jobs will still be there for us.

Mine too. I raised the kids and now am working - I pay the health insurance and put away into HSA and Roth/traditional. I feel the same way - about our health and job opportunities down the road.

It's great that you are thinking about retirement at age 25. My son is the same age and we have already discussed it with him and he started a savings account as well as a 401K at work. I agree with the previous poster that the goal is to have enough income to relax comfortably during retirement age! And I also agree that times have changed with how much that actually means you need to have and retirement is not what it once was. The key is to start and save early in life and you appear to be learning about that now, which is great. Who knows what the future will hold, so it is best to save up for your older years. Start making realistic goals on yearly amounts you want to save, and start slow and see how it goes. You will find you are always adjusting the amount as the years past.
