Learn to say no at times. Its hard but way less stressful than having an emergency come up and not being financially able to handle it. Good luck mama

Start teaching your kids about money. A Google search will turn up lots of ideas and methods. I've always loved garage sales and thrift stores, and I taught my kids that new stuff isn't always better than used, especially for the environment. They called going to garage sales "treasure hunting" because they could find cool things for a quarter. When they were at school, I'd pick up lots of little toys at yard sales that I knew they'd like and put them in a prize bin w/different color stickers on them. Each color sticker signified a different point value. Then I made them do chores and even exercise to earn points, which they could use to buy prizes from the bin. We had a notebook that we called "the bank," where they kept track of their points. They loved it, and it taught them about having to work for what they wanted (and how to add and subtract!). I've always purchased a mix of used and new items for birthday gifts and Xmas, and they never minded at all. I guess it might depend on how young they are when you start or the motivation you give them. When they were about 8 or 9, we watched "The Story of Stuff" together, which talks about how out-of-control production is ruining the planet, and my kids really took that to heart. They're in their 20s now, and both are hard workers and good savers.
