Has anyone had an opportunity to turn in coins to banks for more than their value because of the coin shortage?

Deleted user

@Aaron G Is there a coin shortage?

There are plenty of articles out there about the impact of the coin shortage. It's a consequence of the pandemic, with people simply taking coins out of circulation by not spending with coins. I've heard of some banks offering bonuses for turning in coins, but I haven't actually seen any such offers. https://news.yahoo.com/man-cashes-more-5-000-201944346.html

I believe meal prepping helps me save.

Absolutely! When I actually find the discipline to do it, LOL!

Meal prep is really helpful! Big pots of homemade soup in the winter are my go to.

Uh-oh, I rolled all my change and brought it to the bank about a year ago, so I guess I missed out. And I was so proud of myself for finally getting rid of it. Well, win some, lose some, and it was just a few dollars worth.

I've heard of some banks offering as much as a 10% bonus for coins.

"For inspiration in saving money by spending less, there’s a wonderful book by Judith Levine called "Not Buying It: My Year without Shopping." You can probably find it in your library, and you can hear her read from the book on a YouTube video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9WEwcijWuhQ. Although it’s not a how-to book of handy hints, it’s very entertaining and full of amusing anecdotes. It will make you think."

looking forward to listening to this. Thanks for the link!

No, but I should because I have a lot of coins at home. Just need to make time for it.

Here's a tip for gardening/food, if you have an old potato that's sprouting chop it up into chunks and plant it. This works for a sweet potato also. I just dug up about 20 potatoes from one old potato chopped up that I planted several months ago. Digging them up was really fun like some kind of treasure hunt🤣

@Cat I love this! I have a few sprouted potatoes in the fridge as i type this. How do you know when they're ready to be dug up?

Yes, digging up potatoes was the most fun I've ever had gardening. They spread underground and you can't tell where you'll find them until you dig. You won't get rich doing that, but it's really enjoyable.
P.S. You can plant a sprouting onion to get scallions, even on your windowsill all your round.

thanks for this green onions tip! I stick the cut bulbs in a flower pot and they grow so quick.

Keeping beverages on hand in car as hubby recently paid $2.37 for 1 bottle 20oz of diet pepsi! He is still alive and that came out of HIS pocket money….not our grocery budget.

I'm taking surveys on my smart phone and when I have $50 earned I transfer it to my savings account.

There are great apps out there (Rakuten, Ibotta, Drop) that slow you to save on things you buy at stores, including groceries. Key is to not modify your spending just because you are saving!

By not buying all the things you want to buy and only buying what you need. You can use this money to increase your savings.

You can do the same regrowing trick with celery by keeping the bottom (where all the stocks come out of) in a small glass with some water touching the bottom of it. Once it grows roots, plant outside!

By putting any extra money in your savings, little by little it will grow and you will be able to save towards your goals.
